Bill Schumaker from Crooked Lake Golf Course in Columbia City won the Indiana PGA Senior Professional Championship, shooting a two-day total of 5-under 137.

He bested the second-place finishers, Quinn Griffing of Fort Wayne’s Donald Ross Golf Club and Kokomo Country Club’s Cary Hungate, by five strokes in the tournament that finished Thursday at Harbour Trees Golf Club in Noblesville.

Todd Sandow of Sycamore Golf Club in North Manchester placed fifth at 4 over.

Denny Hepler of Raccoon Run in Warsaw tied for eighth at 6 over. Gary Gant of Fort Wayne’s Pine Valley Country Club took 10th place at 8 over.



Petty, Yates join forces for 2010

Richard Petty Motorsports and Yates Racing plan to merge in 2010, with the four-car team running Fords under the RPM banner. Under the agreement, Yates driver Paul Menard will join RPM drivers Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler and A.J. Allmendinger.


Mackey Madness on 2-year break

With Mackey Arena undergoing a $99.5 million renovation, neither basketball team will have a Mackey Madness event for the next two seasons. The area around Mackey Arena currently is besieged with construction, including work to expand the concourse at the arena.


Shooting guard commits to Irish

Shooting guard Jerian Grant orally committed to Notre Dame, according to reports. The 6-foot-4 guard from DeMatha Catholic High School, Irish coach Mike Brey’s alma mater, in Hyattsville, Md., joins guards Eric Atkins of Baltimore and Alex Dragicevich of Northbrook, Ill., as Irish commitments. Grant is the No. 92 ranked player by Rivals.com.


Hoosiers add two to staff

Drew Adams and Mason Revelette have been added to Indiana’s basketball staff. Adams will serve as coordinator of basketball systems and Revelette will be a graduate manager.


Iverson, Grizzlies finalize contract

The Memphis Grizzlies have signed former NBA MVP and 10-time All-Star Allen Iverson. The move adds the 13-year veteran to a team that has been in a rebuilding mode the past couple seasons.


Fever fall short in Chicago

Kristi Toliver scored 19 points, Candice Dupree and Mistie Bass had 15 each, and the Sky beat the Indiana Fever 86-79 in Chicago to close in on the franchise’s first playoff berth. Katie Douglas scored 25 points to lead Indiana (22-11). Tamika Catchings had 16 points and Shay Murphy added 10.


Pac-10 in, ACC out for Emerald Bowl

The Emerald Bowl has renewed its agreement with the Pac-10 conference but will no longer have an ACC team in the game in San Francisco starting next season. The other team in the game will come from either the Western Athletic Conference, Army or Navy.


Fatigue keeps Bolt out of South Korea

Usain Bolt has pulled out of a meet this month in South Korea because of fatigue. Yonhap news agency cited organizing committee vice president Moon Dong-hoo as saying Bolt is also expected to miss the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix scheduled for Sept. 20.
