Even though he sat out much of last baseball season with a broken finger, Scott Woodward was not forgotten.
The junior at Coastal Carolina who helped lead Norwell to an undefeated record and the 2007 Class 3A state baseball championship, then went on to have a stellar freshman season with the Chanticleers, has been named among the top 100 college players for the 2010 season by College Baseball Blog.
Woodward was chosen as the 79th-best player by the Web site.
“I didn’t play for a month, month and a half, plus I didn’t have that great of a (sophomore) year compared to my freshman year,” Woodward said in a telephone interview from Conway, S.C. “It was hard to dictate how that would factor me getting into the top 100.”
Woodward hit .284 with one home run, 19 RBI and stole 30 bases in 33 attempts in 41 games last season. But the year before he hit .364 with seven home runs and 45 RBI, plus he stole 45 bases.
The sudden success placed Woodward on several freshman All-America teams, including Baseball America, Rivals and Louisville Slugger.
Woodward also played this summer in the prestigious Cape Cod League and helped the Bourne Braves to the championship. He hit .246 but drew 29 walks and was among the league leaders with a .407 on-base percentage.
After this season, Woodward, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound infielder/outfielder, will be eligible for the Major League Baseball draft.
“It all depends on the offer and the round and what my family and I feel that is best for me to base my decision,” Woodward said.
