WASHINGTON – The Postal Service’s Diplomat Plaza station is no longer under review to be closed, but a station in Waynedale is still being considered, a Postal Service spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Facing billions of dollars in deficits, the Postal Service is looking at hundreds of city and suburban post offices to consolidate. A list that began with nearly 700 hundred potential closures during the summer has been culled.

Last month the list was cut to about 300 last month, and that figure will be trimmed further in a list that will be made public Friday.

Ten Indiana stations were still under consideration last month. In the list that will be released Friday, five remain -- the Waynedale station on Old Trail Road, one in Bloomington, two in Gary and one in Indianapolis, said Kim Yates, a Postal Service spokeswoman in Indianapolis.

The agency posted a $3.8 billion loss for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30 and has proposed ways to cut back, including reducing the number of urban and suburban post offices and delivering mail on five -- rather than six – days each week.
