Major League Soccer would like Montreal to become its 19th team in 2012, if it can get a stadium remodeled.

MLS commissioner Don Garber said Sunday night at the MLS Cup title match, which Real Salt Lake won 5-4 on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-goal tie with Los Angeles, that Montreal is a strong candidate for the next round of expansion after Vancouver, British Columbia, and Portland, Ore., enter the league in 2011.

The only existing, soccer-ready stadium in Montreal is 14,000-seat Saputo Stadium.



Taylor women to hold food drive

The Taylor women’s basketball team will hold a food drive to benefit Harvest House Food Pantry in Van Buren when it plays host to Saint Francis at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Fans who bring a bag of canned food will receive free admission, and those who bring one item will be entered in a drawing for a Thanksgiving meal courtesy of Hartford City’s Marsh Supermarket.

Kristy McPherson finished off a 5-under 67 in fading to take a one-stroke lead (8 under) in the LPGA Tour Championship before the second round was suspended because of darkness in Richmond, Texas. … Mark Brooks won the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational for a record third time, making three birdies on the last four holes for a 5-under 67 and a two-stroke victory over Rickie Fowler and D.A. Points in California. … Lee Westwood became Europe’s No. 1 golfer after winning the Dubai World Championship by six strokes in United Arab Emirates.


IU advances in NCAA tourney

Indiana only had nine shots in its second-round NCAA men’s tournament match, but Will Bruin put the shot in that IU needed for a 1-0 win over Butler in Bloomington. IU (12-9-1) advanced to face North Carolina (14-2-3) at 2 p.m. Sunday in Chapel Hill, N.C. Notre Dame was eliminated with a 3-1 loss to Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.


Federer wins round-robin match

Roger Federer overcame an erratic forehand, rallying to beat Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the round-robin stage of the ATP World Tour Finals in London.


Warriors assigned to Pool C

Indiana Tech will compete in Pool C when the NAIA tournament is played Dec. 1-5 in Sioux City, Iowa. The Warriors (33-6) begin pool play against No. 10-seed Biola (Calif.) at 6:45 p.m. Dec. 1. Tech plays No. 3 Northwestern (Iowa) at 9 p.m. Dec. 2, and it finishes pool play against Shawnee State (Ohio) at 6:45 p.m. Dec. 3. The top two teams from the six pools advance to the single-elimination round Dec. 4. The title match is Dec. 5.
