A 57-point second half for Saint Francis broke up a tight battle against Taylor and gave the Cougars an 83-69 win Tuesday in a men’s basketball game at Hutzell Athletic Center.

The Cougars led their downstate rival by just two at the break, 26-24, thanks primarily to 9-of-32 (.281) shooting. But the Cougars shot 54 percent in the second half and led by as many as 22 points to win going away.

DeJovaun Sawyer-Davis did most of the damage for the Cougars, scoring a game-high 31 points, including six three-pointers. Ethan Hussey added 14 and Matt Edmonds 10.

Casey Coons (28) and Tommy Peller (22) combined for 50 of Taylor’s 69. Only one other player scored more than six points. The Trojans were 8 of 18 from the three-point line and made 19 turnovers.

TEMPLE 66, BALL STATE 46 : The host Owls led 33-23 at halftime and limited Ball State to 17-of-44 shooting. Freshman guard Jauwan Scaife was the only Cardinal in double figures with 10 points.

HUNTINGTON 97, KUYPER 69 : The host Foresters ran their record to 8-0, blowing out to a 51-25 halftime lead and limiting Kuyper to 9-of-32 shooting in the first half. Kevin Kyle led five double-figure scorers with 23 points. Bobby Jolliff had 18 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.

MANCHESTER 80, KALAMAZOO 54 : The host Spartans ended this one early, bolting to a 43-16 halftime lead and shooting 56.7 percent in the first half and 55.4 percent for the game.

Matt Morris had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Mitch Schaefer had 17 points and five three-pointers to lead the Spartans. Kalamazoo missed all 13 of its three-point attempts and shot 35 percent (21 of 60) for the game. The visitors made just 8 of 25 in the first half.

INDIANA STATE 64, WESTERN KENTUCKY 63:  Rashad Reed hit one of two free throws with one-tenth of a second remaining to seal the Sycamores’ win in Bowling Green, Ky.



Women

TAYLOR 84, SAINT FRANCIS 73, 2 OT : The Trojans outscored the Cougars 15-4 in the second overtime to end a back-and-forth struggle between ranked NAIA teams at Taylor.

The No. 16 Cougars trailed No. 23 Taylor 39-29 at the half but outscored the Trojans 34-24 in the second half to force overtime.

Chanell Ridley scored 21 to lead the Cougars. Julie Seiss had 12 points and Kayla Mullins 11 for the Cougars.

For Taylor, five players hit double figures, led by Bethany Ballard’s 19 and 12 rebounds. Nellie Eskew added 18 points, Allison Reece 17, Erin Guarneri 13 and Morgan McLeish 12.

HUNTINGTON 75, NORTHWESTERN (OHIO) 72 : The Foresters shot 51 percent – 52.2 percent in the second half – to turn back a strong challenge on the road. Kelsey Green led four double-figure scorers with 19 points.

BALL STATE 71, VALPARAISO 64 : Danielle Gratton scored 17 points, Audrey McDonald 11 and Patrice King 10 to lead the Cardinals in Muncie. Ball State led 33-26 at the half.

ALBION 58, MANCHESTER 53, OT : Chilly shooting (.378) helped keep the host Spartans winless, as Albion outscored them 12-7 in the extra session.

Kailey Honn led the Spartans with 16 points; her three-pointer with two seconds remaining forced the overtime.

The Spartans led 49-46 early in the overtime, but Albion outscored them 12-4 the rest of the way.
