“I have twin daughters, who are almost 5 years old, so I’m reading lots of princess stories – ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ ‘Cinderella,’ that kind – with them,” said Christine Stach, president-elect of Junior League of Fort Wayne and an attorney at Rothberg, Logan and Warsco.
“For adult reading, I just started ‘Good in Bed,’ by Jennifer Weiner, who also wrote ‘In Her Shoes.’ I like to read an author’s books in the order in which they are written, and ‘Good in Bed’ came first. It’s a good summer read about a strong, independent woman who has just broken up with her boyfriend. He wrote an article about her — not using her name but clearly about her. I don’t know what happens; I’m only about one-third of the way into the book.
“Just before that I read ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,’ by Ann Brashares. It’s about four teenage girls – about friendship and caring for each other. Again, it’s light, summer reading. I saw the movie, too; I like the book better, but both are well done.
“I’m a Harry Potter person: I preordered a copy long before the book came out. Rowling is such a good writer! These books … are not just for kids. They are simple but also complex. Her word choice, the double meanings, the names – she manages all of it; there is a purpose for everything. … I think I liked the sixth one most (this is before No. 7 was released July 21). I thought there were more interesting story lines, and she tied together things from the previous books.
“My very favorite book is ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ by Jane Austen. I didn’t read it as I was growing up; I read it as an adult. Up to that time, ‘Gone with the Wind’ had been my favorite, but ‘Pride and Prejudice’ took over the top spot.”
