Motorcyclist who struck deer dies
The man who crashed his motorcycle on Interstate 469 after striking a deer Wednesday has died.
George Welsh, 46, of Fort Wayne, died Friday, according to the Allen County Coroner's Office.
Police were dispatched to the westbound lanes of the highway, near the Interstate 69 interchange about one mile south of Dupont Road, after a driver called to report a man down in the middle of the road, according to police spokesman Michael Joyner. He said the highway was reduced to one lane at 6:30 a.m. for investigation into the crash and was reopened by 9:15 a.m. Welsh was not wearing a helmet, according to police.
Pot farm found
An 11-year-old walking a dog came across 44 marijuana plants in rural Steuben County early Sunday.
The dog had run away and was found wandering around the plants, prompting a call to the Steuben County Sheriff's Department, according to a release from the department.
Police said the plants, each 3-4 feet long, were inside five-gallon buckets by a wooded tree line at a swamp edge on rural farmland near the intersection of Orland Road and CR 900 W in Orland.
Police said fertilizers, potting soil and protective wire cages were used to grow the plants.
