City crews were busy early today creating a roughly 60-foot hole across all three lanes on Spy Run Avenue, just south of State Boulevard near the Indiana Michigan Power facility, to investigate why a section of the thoroughfare was dipping Monday afternoon.
City workers were called to the location just after 5 p.m. Monday after a motorist reported the pavement in the road was buckling, according to city spokesperson Rachel Blakeman. That led to Spy Run being closed from Elizabeth Street to State Boulevard. City crews brought in heavy equipment to take up the road.
Blakeman said at 9 a.m. today that workers are investigating the situation, and that they don't “know what the problem is yet. We're still trying to figure that out.”
Blakeman said until crews determine the cause of the dipping, no timeframe on repairing and, more importantly to motorists, reopening the roadway is available.
“Until we know what the source is, it's going to be hard to know how long it's going to be closed.”
Until then, motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes, such as Main Street and Sherman Boulevard or Columbia Avenue and North Anthony Boulevard, Blakeman said.
Wells Street, since it is under construction, should not be an immediate option. Truck traffic should use Coliseum Boulevard, Blakeman said.
