In this 2006 photo, more than 2,000 people filled parking lots, city sidewalks and streets to watch the lighting of the Wells Fargo Christmas tree. This year, the bank is putting up a light display instead of the tree.

The holidays downtown will have a different look this year, because Wells Fargo is replacing its Christmas tree over Calhoun Street with a light display.

The cost of purchasing, decorating and raising the tree to its position above the skywalk over Calhoun played a part in the bank's decision to do something different this year.

“In today's economy, you have to consider cost,” said Wells Fargo spokeswoman Kelly Sprecher. However, she emphasized that bank officials are excited about the light display they're bringing in as a new attraction in lieu of the lighted tree, which had been a part of the downtown holiday scene for 15 years.

Sprecher did not describe the scene the display will depict, but she did say it is being provided by Hermans' Christmasland, a Pierceton-based company.

The light display will be installed Nov. 14, but it will not be lighted until 6:45 p.m. Nov. 25, the day before Thanksgiving.

Sprecher said she did not know how much installing the tree would have cost or how much the light display costs.

“I don't know whether that's something we'd even release. We generally consider the cost to be proprietary” information, she said.
