It's finally here. The News-Sentinel's newest book, “Allen County Photo Album 1955-59,” has been published and is available for purchase.

The 144-page book features black-and-white photos from The News-Sentinel's archives chronicling the last half of the 1950s. It includes photos of celebrities and politicians, sports, downtown, work and industry, as well as everyday “slice of life” events.

The first “Allen County Photo Album” covered more than a century of photographs. The second book covers only five years because, in 1954, The News-Sentinel hired its own photo staff, and the quantity and quality of the photos improved dramatically.

Chief photographer Brian Tombaugh and library manager Laura Weston-Elchert spent months poring over photo-assignment log books, deciding what shots to include. News and presentation editor Jon Swerens designed the book.

It's being mailed out this week to those who pre-ordered and paid for shipping. Those who pre-ordered but did not pay for shipping may pick up their book(s) 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday in the Fort Wayne Newspapers lobby, 600 W. Main St.

The book also is available in the lobby for $29.95 to those who did not pre-order. In addition, it's available at these bookstores: Mitchell Books, 6360 W. Jefferson Blvd.; Hyde Brothers, Booksellers, 1428 Wells St.; Every Other Book, 3208 Crescent Ave.; Fort Wayne/Allen County Convention and Visitors Bureau, 1021 S. Calhoun St.; and The History Center, 302 E. Berry St.

The photos shown were taken from the book.
