Body identified
The Steuben County Sheriff's Department has positively identified the body found near Indiana 120 on Thursday as 48-year-old city man Stuart Stalcup.
A Silver Alert was issued after Stalcup disappeared near his parents' Snow Lake cottage in Fremont on Oct. 11. He had recently had a stroke and was an insulin-dependent diabetic, and police speculated he may have died from diabetes.
The cause of death is still pending, however.
Stalcup was identified through a picture ID found in his wallet.
Store employees charged with theft
Allen County prosecutors have filed formal theft charges against three Meijer employees alleged to have stolen a television, DVD players and several gaming systems from the Illinois Road store's stock room.
Richard A. Walker, 40; Adam W. Morton, 26; and Arial D. Cooper, 24; each faces a Class D felony theft charge. A patrolling Fort Wayne Police Officer located Cooper's 1997 Dodge Intrepid and another car Nov. 2 filled with electronics parked in a lot in the 1200 block of West Main Street, according to the men's probable-cause affidavits.
Plea deal made in errant gunshots
A city man who fired gunshots into the bedroom of a 10-year-old nearly one year ago accepted a plea agreement in Allen Superior Court on Friday. Kenneth C. Clinton, 23, of the 4600 block of Bowser Avenue, will be sentenced for one count of Class C felony criminal recklessness, as part of a deal that caps a sentence at five years and drops a similar Class D count.
Clinton was a passenger in a sport utility vehicle that fired at a car carrying his ex-girlfriend, Nov. 8, 2008, according to an affidavit written by Fort Wayne Police Detective Taya L. Strausborger.
The bullets missed the car but struck an apartment in the 4700 block of South Anthony Boulevard housing Niva Holland and nine children. One bullet shattered a window in the bedroom where a 10-year-old was, Strausborger wrote.
Clinton will be sentenced Nov. 30.
Suspect indicted in bank holdup in 2000
A federal grand jury returned an indictment on a city man accused of trying to rob a bank on Aug. 15, 2000.
William Hagler, 32, has been charged in a single-count indictment with attempted bank robbery, the result of an investigation by the Northeast Federal Bank Robbery Task Force, Allen County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana State Police.
AT&T to convert Centennial stores
AT&T on Friday announced that it completed its acquisition of Centennial Communications Corp. AT&T said that by late January, AT&T signs will be installed in all Centennial locations.As for the future of Centennial employees here, AT&T spokeswoman McCall Butler said, “It's too early to provide market-by-market details.” She added that AT&T wants to find work for as many current Centennial employees as possible. According to the Community Research Institute at IPFW, Centennial employed the equivalent of 615 full-time employees last year.
Man pleads guilty to marijuana possession
An Indianapolis man who Fort Wayne Police found on Interstate 69 with a pound of pot in a pickup in January pleaded guilty Friday in Allen Superior Court.
Quontico T. Brisker, 32, agreed to a single charge of Class D felony possession of marijuana (more than 30 grams) as part of a deal that calls for a 1 ½-year sentence, which could be served on work release or through Community Corrections, if he's ruled eligible.
Brisker was arrested Jan. 6 after the pickup he was in was pulled over for speeding, according to Brisker's probable-cause affidavit. A city police officer immediately noticed a stench of marijuana and had Brisker and the driver get out, the affidavit said.
The officer located a pound of marijuana tucked behind Brisker's seat and nearly $1,000 on him, the affidavit said.
Brisker told police the men had driven to Fort Wayne from Indianapolis to purchase 10 pounds of marijuana, and that the 1 pound the office found was a sample batch, the affidavit said.
WaterFurnace gives $5K to USO
WaterFurnace, a Fort Wayne-based manufacturer of residential, commercial, industrial and institutional geothermal and water-source heat pumps, is giving $5,000 to the United Service Organization of Indiana. The funds are proceeds from the company's annual supplier golf outing, which included on-course fundraising to support the USO. The USO is a nonprofit organization that provides recreational and welfare services to U.S. troops and their families.
Decatur receives $50K grant for planning study
The city of Decatur has received a $50,000 planning grant from the state. The money will be used for a comprehensive planning study. These federal dollars are from the Community Development Block Grant program, which is administered by the state's Office of Community and Rural Affairs.
The plan will address future land-use options for redevelopment and rehabilitation of existing areas in Decatur. Its recommendations will focus on accommodating community growth while creating an economic environment conducive to business in the city.
Three Muncie men plead guilty to cross burning
INDIANAPOLIS — Three central Indiana men have been sentenced to federal prison after they pleaded guilty to burning a cross in the yard of a black family's home in 2008.
Forty-one-year-old Richard LaShure was sentenced to 15 months in prison and two years probation Thursday in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis.
His son, 20-year-old Richard Logue, was sentenced to one year in prison and two years probation. A third man, 20-year-old Aaron Latham, was sentenced to one year in prison and three years probation.
All three men from Muncie were convicted on charges they conspired to violate civil rights and interfered with housing rights.
