Fort Wayne team advances to Big League World Series

It's the first time ever for District 10

For the first time ever, District 10 has qualified for the Big League World Series. The team, which consists of players from the Fort Wayne area, beat Michigan 4-1 in the championship game today in the Central Regional at Wyoming, Mich.

Jake Weber fired a complete-game five hitter for in the championship game for Fort Wayne while striking out seven. It was Weber's second win in the regional.

Michigan took the lead 1-0 in the fourth inning but Fort Wayne came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth when Charlie Sipe's single drove in Steve Remesnik.

Fort Wayne took command of the game in the bottom of the sixth by scoring three runs. They loaded the bases on a walk to Grant Wilson and singles by Andre Jernigan and Tyler Herbst. Remesnik's single drove in Wilson with the go-ahead run. Two wild pitches scored Jernigan and Herbst.

Fort Wayne was 4-0 in the regional. Evan Vansumeren led the team at the plate with eight hits.

Named to the All-Tournament team for Fort Wayne, were Sipe, Vansumeren, Weber, Matt Kaplanis, Will Coursen-Carr and Elliott Ford.

The Big League World Series will be played in Easley, South Carolina. Eleven teams, separated into two pools, are in the World Series. Pool A consists of six teams from the United States and Pool B is five international teams. The top two teams in each pool advance to the semifinals.

Fort Wayne begins pool play Wednesday against South Carolina.

Including the state tournament Fort Wayne is 8-0. They have scored 100 runs and given up 9.
