DAY TRIP TO GOSHEN FOR GREAT PIZZA AND MORE
If you like a good day trip, Goshen is a really fun place to explore. Downtown Goshen features a thriving assortment of indie businesses contained within just a few charming and well-preserved blocks. In fact, Downtown Goshen, Inc. offers facade enhancement grants for businesses and building owners that are transforming and restoring the look of the district. Park your car and you’ll be able to walk between bakeries, cafes and boutiques while enjoying the delightful vibe of a small and friendly Midwestern town. Shop for women’s clothing, accessories, home decor and gifts at Jules Boutique, Urban Gypsy, Ten Thousand Villages, Gift of Gab and Reverie. Browse used and new records or catch a live musical performance at Ignition Music, then grab a great espresso drink at the attached coffee shop, The Electric Brew. Olympia Candy Kitchen; Maple City Market, a natural foods co-op; Mattern’s Butcher Shop & Corner Deli and the uber-delicious Venturi have you covered for eats and sweets. The latter offers certified Neapolitan pizza, craft cocktails and delicious desserts like panna cotta and Nutella pizza (mmm, hmm) and is No. 1 must in Goshen. Just outside the downtown historic district, the Old Bag Factory houses even more independent cafes, sweets shops and stores selling furniture, quilts, pottery, antiques, sculpture and secondhand musical instruments. Just over one hour away, Goshen is an indie gem and a perfect choice for when you get the desire to explore beyond Fort Wayne. While each business has varying operating days and hours, cityonthego.org is a great starting resource for planning your trip.

OPEN FOR SERVICE
It is my firm belief that for any community, its economy and tourism to grow and thrive, it must be inclusive and welcoming. In response to recent legislative moves in Indiana, a grassroots organization called Open for Service emerged to promote businesses that oppose discrimination. Instead of calling out those who practice discrimination, Open for Service instead celebrates the businesses that open their doors and services to anyone of any faith, race or sexual orientation, highlighting acceptance and tolerance of everyone. Open for Service urges business owners to register on their site and order a sticker ($10 each) to post for their customers to see, to let them know the business will not deny goods or services to any client due to faith, race or sexual orientation. Net proceeds for the sales of stickers will be donated to SCORE, a nonprofit association founded more than 50 years ago that helps launch small businesses through education and mentorship. Visit Open for Service at www.openforservice.org and SCORE at www.score.org.

PANERA BREAD BAKERS-IN-TRAINING
In my quest to expose my kids to every nook and cranny of life, I’m always on the hunt for special events and classes. If you have a child between the ages of 5 and 12 who’s even remotely interested in what happens in the kitchen, Panera Bread is now offering a great program for them. The Bakers-In-Training class introduces kids to the basic fundamentals of baking and exposes them to how a working commercial kitchen operates. First, each child is given an apron and traditional baking hat, which they’ll take home to use for their at-home culinary adventures. Then they get hands-on experience, learning how to make bread by stretching, shaping and scoring two French baguettes, one of which is donated to a local shelter (great bonus lesson). The aspiring chefs then get to decorate their own cookies with expert pointers from Panera’s artisan baker. The class is perfect for groups of 10-15 and is a fantastic activity for birthday parties, clubs and scout groups (for which Panera offers complimentary patches). The class fee is $20 per attendee and one adult chaperone is required for every five children. Classes must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance and are available between 2 and 4:30 p.m. For more information, registration and required permission forms, visit www.panerabread.com/bakersintraining.
