Bike 101 Lakes Event Raises Money For the Arts

The Arts and Humanities Fund of the Steuben County Foundation is organizing the 9th Annual Pro Fed Bike 101 Lakes event on May 12. Two years ago, the event was named an Indiana Bicentennial Legacy Project.

The proceeds from the event support scholarships for area middle and high school students to attend summer camps in music, art, dance and photography as well as support a college scholarship (Heart of the Arts Scholarship) for  Steuben county high school graduates. Local students Karli Forte (Interlochen Arts Academy Graduate 2017) and Emily Thompson (Fremont High School Graduate 2017) have both been recipients of summer camp grants. Karli is currently a student at IU’s Jacob’s School of Music studying voice. Emily Thompson is a student at St. Olaf’s studying music education. Last year’s Heart of the Arts Scholarship recipient, JP Soulliere, is studying sacred music at Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio.

The ride begins at Coldwell Banker Roth Wehrly Graber Building, 2535 N 200 W, between Crooked Lake and Lake James.  There are five routes of various lengths including a family route and all of the routes feature scenic rides of Steuben County’s lakes and countryside.  There are rest stops along the way with beverages, snacks and restrooms, and after the ride lunches are available for purchase. The ride begins at 9 a.m. with a group start after the presentation of the colors and the National Anthem is sung by a previous summer camp grant winner.

In the past 8 years, hundreds of bicyclists have supported the Arts and Humanities Fund through the ride. The fund is also seeking sponsorship. Please call the Steuben County Community Foundation at 260.665.6656 for more information or check the website, http://www.bike101lakes.com , for maps of the five routes and a registration form to be mailed with the registration fee.  The fees are $35 for adults and $10 for students, and they include a T-shirt.   There are also family-friendly rates available.
