Carefree Holiday Hair: Chic Ponytails
Olympic athletes like volleyball star Kerri Walsh Jennings, gymnast Nastia Liukin and figure skater Nancy Kerrigan know the value of a good ponytail. While the standard ponytail is pretty utilitarian, every now and then, the sporty staple gets a red carpet upgrade, thanks to famous ponytail lovers like Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez. This season, the ponytail is getting a major upgrade, not for worldwide sporting events or the award show circuit, but for holiday glam as well as everyday looks.
The benefits of a ponytail are numerous, from the youthful face-lifting of a high and tight style, showing off a spectacular pair of earrings or simply extending the life of a style in the days after a professional blowout. Ponytail embellishments are also back in a big way, with a simple black ribbon, sparkly clips or textured wraps. Shop Ulta and Charming Charlie for a wide range of elastics, styling tools and fashionable pony cuffs.
Whether worn high or slung low, there’s a stylish ponytail look for most hair lengths and any hair texture:
For shorter lengths, pull hair into a sleek side part and secure the pony as low as possible. Use an elastic that matches the hair color or wrap a small section of hair around the base, securing the ends, for an elegant look. Alternatively, pull back as much hair as possible, curling strands that aren’t long enough into a few face-framing pieces for an undone yet still stylish look.
For a fun retro look, flip the ends into a dramatic swoop. Pair with a sharp, liquid cat eye and a pink pout for a vintage Barbie vibe. Play around with texture and try a tousled half-up/half-down look, giving a bit more height to the crown. With bangs, the look becomes very Brigitte Bardot.
Longer locks look great when worn in a sleek and straight, mid-to-low pony or pulled into a princess ponytail with shiny, bouncy curls a la Kate Middleton. For an edgier style, section off a long, low ponytail with thin elastics spaced evenly down the length.
A side ponytail, worn low at the nape of the neck, is an elegant take on evening hair. Wrap with a length of black velvet ribbon, letting the ends hang loose for more casual looks.
