Pick some apples!

Johnny Appleseed would be proud of us

One of the most delightful things about September is the abundance of apples — from the Johnny Appleseed Festival (Sept. 19-20 at Johnny Appleseed Park near Memorial Coliseum), which in our humble opinion has the best food of any festival in the area, to the local farms that offer pick-your-own apples.

There are few more enjoyable ways to spend a warm September afternoon than wandering the rows of trees, breathing in apple-scented air and dodging bees, finding just the right red-cheeked fruit for apple pie. In Allen County, there are Cook’s Orchard, 8724 Huguenard Road, and Advanced Tree Technology, 12818 Edgerton Road, outside New Haven. Both offer a variety of species. Whether you prefer hearty and tart reds like Courtland and Jonathon or the sweeter Fuji or Honey Gold, now’s the time to seek out fresh-off-the-tree fruit.
