The Dog Days of Summer — in Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne is definitely fido friendly. There are an abundance of places where you can dine with your dog. The Allen County SPCA has teamed up with several area restaurants for its annual Paw-Friendly Patio Program.

The program encourages people to visit the 16 participating establishments through Labor Day and enjoy dining al fresco with their pooch.

The Allen County SPCA has created the Paw Friendly Patio Pawsport, available at its office or any of the participating restaurants; it encourages people to collect a stamp from each of the participating restaurants. When the Pawsport is filled, bring it to the Allen County SPCA to receive a free T-shirt. 4914 S. Hanna Street, 260.744.0454, allencountyspca.org

Ruff Raw

Lee and Karen Albright are concerned with what is fed to dogs. They have established Albright’s Raw Pet Food.

“Most people might know us from our two Fort Wayne meat and deli markets,” said Karen. (Both stores were sold to Feders Meats earlier this year). “Quite a few customers would come in asking about raw dog food and what would be inexpensive raw meat to feed their pets. We saw a strong movement toward raw food and figured we could move into this market.”

In 2016, the Albrights began manufacturing raw pet food. “Every step in the process has to be approved,” said Lee. “We created nine recipes to get to the one that we use. There are lab tests and field tests that must be done. Our manufacturing facility must be FDA compliant and even the products’ labeling has to go through a strict approvals process.”

Their product is natural and raw. Its ingredients include beef muscle, chicken breast with bone, beef kidney, beef liver, eggs, kale, kelp, cranberries, sunflower oil and some eggshells for calcium.

Their facility can process up to 22,000 pounds a day. The food is sold frozen and is available at 3-Rivers Natural Grocery, Uncle Bill’s Pet Center, Petware House, the Health Food Store and Milan Center Feed & Grain.
Green Bean Delivery delivers to individual dog owners.

“Pets don’t have a choice in what they eat, so owners should do their research and look at the ingredients of the food they are serving to their pets,” said Lee. “Nutrition is vital and we have worked a hard to produce a product pet owners can trust.” Albrightsrawdogfood.com
