Fort Wayne magazine August 2026

In the 21st century, waitpersons are trained to try to convince you to order dessert. Growing up on the east coast in the 1970s, I would often order a dessert and hear the waitress say, “Do you really need that, Tubby?” Don’t feel sorry for me. I won at life. I am still tubby and I still love dessert! Now, on the rare occasion when someone disparages me for ordering dessert, I respond thusly: “I eat dessert for the government,” “My doctor tells me that this carrot cake is the only thing preventing me from spontaneously combusting,” “Because I don’t want ‘I skipped pie’ etched on my tombstone,” “Because I find it much easier to turn down dessert after I’ve eaten it,” “Because no great story ever began, ‘It all started the night I skipped the strawberry shortcake'” and “Because the people who criticize others for ordering dessert are usually the same ones who say things like, ‘People get excited about the weirdest things,’ ‘Must be nice to throw away money like that,’ and ‘Some of us have actual work to do.'” Yes, I love dessert and so should you! Which is why Fort Wayne magazine (for its annual Savor issue) has assembled a guide to the region’s best restaurant desserts along with a master list of Summit City eateries.
