Viewpoint – Norman Ziolkowski

SEEING THE WOOD FOR THE TREES: Norman Ziolkowski studied music in college and envisioned spending his life as a pianist. Then he was diagnosed with arthritis. A wrist operation spelled the end of his piano playing. Ziolkowski was devastated, of course, but he eventually made an artistic pivot. He had grown up the son of a maker of wood models for manufacturing industries and he started to create wood sculpture. Ziolkowski said he was a little bit tentative at first because he has had no formal artistic training. Hearing him discuss his artistic process, including how he chooses the wood, is fascinating, but there is not space for that here. Make a plan to talk to him about it. Ziolkowski said he thinks “art should uplift people and make them appreciate the creativity inherent in our human nature.” normanziolkowski.com
