Viewpoint – Teresa Stephens
MAKE BOOK: On a trip to New York City a few years back, photographer Teresa Stephens saw something that would change her life forever (although she didn’t know it at the time): A mannequin wearing a dress made out of newspapers. The sight of that mannequin percolated in her brain until she decided to make her first book dress, aka a dress made out of book pages (she said she tries to use library books that are slated to be thrown out). Stephens recently released a book of photographs of her dresses called, appropriately enough, “The Book Dress Book.” “My goal with my art is to make things that are beautiful,” she said. “There’s enough sadness in the world. I don’t want to add to that.” A show of Stephens’ work opens at the Garden at 3308 N. Anthony Boulevard on June 17.
