Local Live Music Gets Texan Twist

Carolyn Martin is a recent addition to the local music community. Born in Texas, Carolyn lived in Nashville for many years before relocating to Fort Wayne in 2016. Before moving to Indiana, Carolyn was best known as a Western swing singer–a style of music similar to big band swing, but with fiddle and steel guitar instead of trumpets and saxes.

Martin is a member of the Western Swing Hall of Fame and the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame, and has been honored as the Western Swing Singer of the year by organizations including: the Western Music Association, the Academy of Western Artists and the Ameripolitan Music Awards.

Martin has been described as one of the finest Western swing singers in the business.”I have grown increasingly in awe of Carolyn’s talent: her taste, her musical sensibility, the thoughtfulness and care she brings to every line of every song she sings,” said Ranger Doug of band Riders In the Sky.

And Vince Gill simply said, “Carolyn Martin is a great swing singer.”

From her early days playing Texas dance halls and honky-tonks through the 11 years she spent as a member of the Grammy-nominated Time Jumpers to her current tours with Carolyn Martin’s Swing Band, Martin’s live shows have always aimed to deliver.

Martin performs at Don Hall’s Guesthouse, 1313 West Washington Center Road, Wednesdays 7-10 p.m. and is usually accompanied by her husband, bassist Dave Martin. “We don’t limit ourselves to playing only swing music at the Guest House, because there are so many great songs out there. When our trio plays, we’ll usually play more songs from the Great American Songbook. But if we’re playing at a local bar with a five piece band, or at a street festival, we may play a lot more classic R&B or country music,” said Martin. “We love it all.”
